The morning started with great excitement in anticipation of the next two days. Ready to move to a new destination & get to see a little more of this wonderful part of the world.
I have always loved train journeys but only if they are short. But the one and only one that we loved & craved for more at the end, was the Oslo – Bergen seven hours awesome journey through the mountains & glaciers. Get a feel here Oslo to Bergen…A journey of a lifetime 🕺💃
So there we were, after a sumptuous breakfast and a short wait at the station, ready to board our coach for a four hours journey from Stockholm to Gothenburg, the second largest city of Sweden. The view of the greens after a couple of minutes gave us an inkling of what was to follow. Some real good experiences. And as we were settling down a bit, got the sight of this cute little princess. My newest friend for the next couple of hours. And what fun we had. It’s always so good to be with children and what a wonderful start to our journey.
Time passed away quickly and before we realized, we were ready to alight. The first impressions were a feeling of peace, a casual way of life & a city which was not too much in a hurry. As we came out of the station, we found we were right there at the most happening place of town. The City Center. And what caught our attention was the mesh of tram lines, all around. We had arrived and it was this nice & lovely tram city, Gothenburg.
Just outside the station complex, which also has a mall attached, we found one Pressbyran store, Swedish convenience chain which sell magazines, newspapers, chilled drinks, chips, candy bars, ice creams, hot dogs & tobacco products. They also sell tickets for public transport & phone cards. We quickly purchased our 48 hour public transport tickets which would take care of all our transportation needs for the duration of our stay.
The Central Station & the mall complex. Next to it is the Bus Station from where you get buses for long distance travel.
A 10 minute bus ride, smooth check in at our hotel & a quick burger lunch later, we were ready to explore.
The famous Grand Theater at the City Center. And another view below
The City center is a cool place to hang around with many high end hotels, buildings with beautiful architecture, restaurants, fast food joints, parks, the canal boat rides & lots & lots of green. Let’s look around a bit.
Scandinavia is synonymous with bicycles & a large segment of population use these as their mode of transport & are most happy riding. And in most cities you will also find a giant wheel & people enjoying the ride.We next ventured out to explore the green countryside with pretty houses. And what transport did we avail to go around? What better than trams, in this tram city.
Back at the city center later in the evening, this one structure we found so towering. That’s the King. The City will be built here he said, in 1623, pointing his finger down. And so Gothenburg came into existence.
Gothenburg is also known as the canal city. And here below is the oldest canal & some more of them in the city. A ride through the canals was an awesome experience.
The evening was spent having some excellent dinner at a Chinese cuisine restaurant & we were then back to our hotel to spend some more relaxing moments, lazing around at the terrace bar with beautiful views of the city.
The next day was a sailing day. Sailing through Gothenburg port area on a small cruise ship enjoying the beauty of the islands & spending some relaxed moments on few of them. The port of Gothenburg is the oldest Swedish port & the largest port in Scandinavia. And hence, Gothenburg is also known as the Port City.
Come let’s take the ride.
Two wonderful days spent in this nice, cool & peaceful Swedish city. Just enough for a small city like Gothenburg. So very refreshing. Just like the waves coming and hitting you and getting you ready, for some more adventure 🚣
