2 days in a rural Bengal Farmhouse

We all dream. Be it our education, career, family or pleasure. And as we move on in life, our dreams keep changing. For me now dreams mostly revolve around travel. Having traveled quite a bit all around, a dream remained unfulfilled till just a few days back. The dream of spending at least 2 days in a rural Bengal farmhouse, India amidst the green. Crops, vegetables, pond, fishing, chirping of birds and peace on a solo trip. And some good food. So thrilled it finally came true.

Whom to thank?

In the last two years or so that’s what we have been doing. Thanking doctors for their incredible commitment and for saving millions of lives during the pandemic. In my case though this doctor was God sent to fulfill my dream. And that too one who happened to be my namesake.

On a flight back from Europe his seat was just behind mine. Soon we started chatting about our own experiences during our holidays. He had booked through a travel operator and for me as always it was a self planned travel. Soon we became friends, exchanged our numbers and during our discussions he mentioned about this beautiful farmhouse. It was his weekend go-to destination and immediately I decided to make it my own as well. And there after a fortnight I was heading to his doctor friend’s family farmhouse 50 kms away from the City of Joy, Calcutta.

The Warmest of Welcome

Followed by my favorite Breakfast

Come now let’s feel the place

The beautiful flowers

And the fruits

The Farm

My relaxed afternoons

The lovely evenings

And my favorite place after dusk

Nice clean & cozy Rooms

This home stay farmhouse has 6 rooms which can accommodate 14 people in all. The new wing which also houses the kitchen has 4 rooms and the old wing on the other side of a pond has 2 rooms.

And lovely home cooked food

Breakfast is Luchi tarkari or bread omelette with sweets, tea or coffee. Lunch is Bengali fish meal or veg meal. They serve tea coffee with muri makha (puffed rice mixed with a bit of mustard oil and mixtures) and singhara/tele bhaja (fried specialties) in the evening followed by a dinner of chicken or veg dish with rotis and sweets. When in a group lunch is served in the traditional Bengali way on Kala Pata (Banana leaves).

The pleasant surprise

My First’s during this trip

Fishing

Exposure to Mushroom Cultivation

Experiencing Rice Harvesting

Watch the process here

And the grains falling

A walk through the fields

For a beautiful sunset on Damodar River

And a walk back through the village

The howling foxes in the night

The first night when I heard the sound I wondered who was yelling & screaming. Then realized it was the howling of foxes. I do not know who named it howling. Because it was such a beautiful synchronized musical rendition. Hear it out.

While I was on my way from Calcutta the question that cropped up in my mind was ‘Am I expecting too much?’. Once there I realized the reality was much beautiful than what I had dreamt off.

Some of my friends had recently expressed their wish about a little bit more information about this place. Want to visit right now? This one is for you. Don’t miss it.

  1. The Damodar River is not just important for its geographical significance. It also has immense cultural and religious importance for the people of the region. The river is considered sacred by the Hindus, who believe that taking a dip in its waters can wash away their sins. The river is also associated with the legend of Lord Krishna, who is believed to have been tied to a mortar (damodar) by his mother Yashoda. Hence the name Damodar for the river.
