Best of Capri in One Day, Italy

During our travels to Europe, one of our favorite destination has been Italy. And for those who fancy the Amalfi Coast, it’s one of the best places to enjoy a longish holiday. Moreover if you do not wish to splurge a lot on accommodation, here is how to get the best experience. Stay for a couple of days in Naples and then move to Sorrento. It’s a lovely lemon town on the sea front and has a majestic charm about it. While there, enjoy the Amalfi coastline with day trips to Amalfi and Positano. Keep your next day for a visit to Pompeii and a hike to Mount Vesuvius. Then it’s about the Best of Capri in One Day.

Enjoy your journey to Capri

Although you can avail of one of the many ferries that leave from Sorrento’s Marina Piccola port and reach Capri in 30 minutes, the fun lies elsewhere. It’s in the journey itself. Therefore you should not miss opting for a semi-private cruise instead which would take you around for 3 hours before reaching Capri. We were 11 of us from different parts of the world and it was real fun meeting and making friends with some cool like-minded travelers. The trip was certainly worth the money with a fun loving guide to add some laughter to our day. Have a look at what to expect.

We booked our trip on Viator.com, but do check out GetYourGuide before settling for the best deal that you can lay your hands on. Moreover these boat cruises are also available from Naples and Amalfi if you happen to be staying there.

We are in Capri

Capri with its jaw dropping natural beauty, as we just experienced while on our journey, is also famous for many other reasons. The classy hotels, delicious cuisine, the shopping, the chair ride to the top and the peace of remote corners being some of them despite the place being packed with visitors during the summer months. No surprise that the rich and famous park their yachts here in Marina Grande port for days together.

Visit Villa San Michele

Villa San Michele is the dream home of Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe who came to Capri in 1885. “My house must be open to the sun, to the wind, and the voice of the sea, just like a Greek temple, and light, light, light everywhere” is what he had wished for. The Villa stands on the ruins of an ancient Chapel dedicated to San Michele. The Garden around is very refreshing. Book your online tickets in advance to avoid a queue although we were lucky not to find too many people before us.

If you care for history and when it involves the stories of Capri, you must head to this place. Those of you who have read the short story ‘The Lotus Eater’ by William Somerset Maugham would recall about Thomas Wilson the central character. Wilson had given up his job at the age of 35 and settled down in Capri for 25 years to enjoy a life of complete leisure in the midst of nature. Somerset would watch Wilson have his drink at Caffe Morgano before going for a swim. We opted for a cold coffee with ice-cream which was nice.

Walk back to the funicular station

For a journey back with amazing views

Getting back to the port and boat

  1. What a wonderful trip! I have been to Napoli and to the Amalfi Coast several times but I never made it to Capri. I like that the tour you booked gave you plenty of time to explore the island but also offered some great opportunities to swim in the sea. I would love to visit Villa San Michelle, that garden looks so dreamy.

      1. Oh my did I miss it big time. We were in Sorrento visiting Pompeii too. So it was just 40 minutes to ferry to this lovely island with a funicular ride to AnaCapri!!!

  2. We loved the chance to visit Capri and were glad we stayed on the island for a few days to enjoy it after the day tourists left. But sadly we did not get down to the water level. And are sad we missed the grottos. The water looks great for a dip! Those views from the top sure can’t be missed. The gardens looks like a great spot for a relaxing stop.

I so enjoyed this, it really took me back to our own visit to Capri nearly 30 years ago! We took the bigger tourist boat to get to the island but love your suggestion to book a private transfer in a small boat which tours you around the area before getting to the island. I love funiculars, and the view from the top looks amazing!

I haven’t been to Italy but this part of Italy is surely win my heart. Capri is beautiful and I really like your journey to Capri through cliffs and grottos and with a swim break. For me, Villa San Michele and the church are not to be missed.

  5. Capri’s green and stony vibes are absolutely stunning! I’m also interested to try out the chair lift — I’m hoping to muster the courage to do so. And, after a day of exploring this lovely island, I like to unwind at The Augustus Gardens, which is ideal for a nature lover like me.

  6. I was able to spend a night in Capri when I visited Italy. It was nice to be there when the day trippers left but I believe a day trip is really enough. On of my favorites was Limoncello
    tasting!

  7. Capri is a heavenly beautiful place to visit with its quaint old world charm. The funicular rides, with a bird’s eye view, the lush gardens of Augusta, and the villa San Michele are such magnificent architectural masterpieces. Thank you so much for sharing.

I haven’t been to Capri yet, but I would love to. You had a fantastic trip with such great activities. I love the idea of taking a boat trip. I would also want to take a funicular ride to Anacapri, it seems great fun, and the views are fabulous. Also, San Michael Church looks beautiful, with fantastic architecture. It’s a great guide to Capri!.
