A day out to Acropolis, Athens

When you think of Greece and then Athens, the first picture that comes to mind is that of the Acropolis. This one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world is always packed with tourists unless you visit the moment the gates open at 8 AM. Crowds swell up with the group tours arriving after 10 AM and as always to avoid a queue we booked our tickets online in advance. The weather was awesome, sunny and cool and we were soon on our way using our hop-on-hop-off ticket for a day out to Acropolis, Athens first before moving on to other spots and reached soon thereafter.

The neighborhood of Monastiraki

Monastiraki Square is full of action all the time till late in the night. The train and metro station, shopping stops, bakeries, coffee shops, the flea market, archaeological insights, iconic landmarks like the Hadrian’s Library, the Ancient Agora and the rebuilt Stow of Attalos all just round the corner and also a great view of the Acropolis hills . Moreover the two hop-on-hop-off operators have a stop here as well which we used to reach Acropolis. It’s also a great location to click a few memories as well.

Our hotel Blend Hotel was located on Vissis 2 which was just a five minute walk from the square and the most happening place to stay while in Athens.

Acropolis of Athens

A bit of History

The naturally fortified hills of the Acropolis has been inhabited since the neothilic era. During the Mycenaean period in the 13th Cent BC, it was fortified and became the seat of the local ruler. In the 6th Cent BC it was declared the most important sanctuary of the city dedicated primarily to goddess Athena.

Acropolis was adorned with the first temples and other buildings while worshipers dedicated many offerings such as marble statues, clay and metal vases etc. This tradition continued till the Roman period. The buildings that dominate today are the Propylaia, Parthenon, Erechtheion, the Sacred Rock, Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia, Athena Nike Temple among others. These monuments went through many transformations upon the prevalence of Christianity and the Frankish and Ottoman rule.
