How to reach Red Beach
Red Beach is located in Akrotiri which is around 15 kms from the capital town of Fira. You can take a bus from Fira and then take a small walk followed by a hike through a rocky terrain to reach there. Be careful not to slip and of falling rocks at times as you go down to reach the beach. We took the walk and the hike to reach there and reached safely without any problems. The other option is to take a boat from Akrotiri to reach there.

The prehistoric town of Akrotiri was the home to ancient Minoans which was completely destroyed and buried due to an enormous volcanic eruption. The town was famous for its copper trade and was incredibly sophisticated for its time. The buildings were multi-storeyed with indoor lavatories and an efficient drainage system. Built around the ruins of the Castle of Akrotiri a 13th century fortress, what remains today gives an insight into its glorious past.

We are in Red Beach
Many people would wonder whether the sand in Red Beach is red. We did that too. To some extent that’s true because the beach is covered with reddish-black gravel. However the name of the beach actually originates from the reddish color of the steep cliffs created from the volcanic lava which you can observe all around.
