This was a day tour we were looking forward to. After a sumptuous breakfast at our Hotel Matina, we were picked up from just outside our hotel. The bus journey to the port was nice and the boarding on to our boat swift. And then we set off for our first destination, the Santorini Volcano. After a wonderful two hours there as we boarded back on to our boat for the next part of our journey, we realized why Santorini Caldera tour is amazing. And why you must not miss out when there.

Santorini Volcano – our first stop

The Santorini Volcano has the largest crater in the world and is at a height of 300 m and with a diameter of 11 kms. The origin of this Nea Kameni volcano dates back to the late 16th century and is an exciting place to be right on top. The views are amazing and the hike quite interesting and not too challenging.

Hot Springs, the next stop

The Santorini Hot Springs which lies on a tiny uninhabited islet of Palea Kameni is a swimmer’s delight. The continuous volcanic activity below ensures that the springs temperature is maintained between 30-35 degrees centigrade. The sulfuric spring water is said to be beneficial for the skin and joints.
Our co-passengers were all set and prepared for the plunge as we approached the hot spring.

Enjoying the swim

Journey next

We now head to the island of Thirassia, a small island north-west of Nea Kameni. It’s a perfect place to spend the afternoon with some drinks, food and exploring the beach side. You could have a swim as well. We had one and a half hours to ourselves to go as we liked.

Thirassia Island

Time to go around

Great places to sip, dine & relax

And enticing food options

Next the Caldera & the cliffs

As we moved ahead for the next part of our journey, this was again another very exciting feature of our day tour. Journey through the Caldera and view of the cliffs and couple of landmarks of Fira & Oia from the Agean sea on a pleasure ride.

Just in case your thoughts are revolving around what’s a Caldera and how is it different from a crater in case of a volcanic explosion, let’s share with you the difference.
While in the morning we were on the top of the Crater visiting the volcano which had externally exploded and buried towns like Akrotiri with rocks & lava, the Caldera was the depression created after an inward collapse of the volcano. As a result a large chunk of the island of Thera (also now called Santorini) sunk into the Agean sea. The boat takes us around the Caldera and then gives us some great views of the rock cliffs as we cross the villages of Fira & Oia. Come enjoy the journey and be there.

Some fun, new friends

As we head to Athinios port

Santorini. The perfect destination for a rocking holiday. With great spots to explore and chill in Fira, Oia, Kamari & Akrotiri villages. And Athinios Port for the cruises and the boat tours.
The refreshing self-conducted walks, museums, Akrotiri pre-historic town excavation site, islands, the red, black & white beaches, water sports, half & full day boat tours, dinner cruises, awesome food, shopping and stunning views of Aegean. What more can one ask for?
