We reached Athinios Port by the morning Mykonos to Santorini Seajet ferry. A journey that was so very refreshing. Mr. Fomes from our hotel was there to pick us up. As it turned out he had visited my hometown Calcutta, now Kolkata on a cargo ship many years back. He narrated his memories and how he used to love the city as we first crossed Fira the capital. And in 10 mins we were near our hotel at Kamari Village in Santorini. Today we share with you an insight into why you must consider staying in Kamari during your holiday to this fascinating Greek destination.

A bit about Kamari

Santorini has a lot of history attached to it in view of the volcanic eruptions that devastated the Aegean island of Thera in the 1620 B.C. However there is not much of history when it comes to Kamari village because it came into being much later.
After the earthquake in 1956, people from the affected areas started settling down here. The village was well planned out and is an ideal destination for a relaxed holiday on the Aegean seafront and bordering the Mesa Vouno rock and mountain. The name Kamari comes from the word Kamara, meaning Arch in Greek.

Why stay in Kamari?
6 minutes to Santorini Airport by car

20 minutes to Athinios Port by car

15 minutes to Fira by bus

Lovely stay options

As we roamed around the streets of this wonderful part of Santorini, we noticed some lovely properties. One distinct feature was that a lot of them have a swimming pool even if it is a small one. There are smaller properties too to suit budget travelers.

The day we landed in Kamari we had to visit this hotel where my doctor friend’s family had left back some of their valuable stuff in a hurry. They were there holidaying a couple of days back.

Levante Beach Hotel is a nice beachfront hotel with many different room options on offer. It is quite a big property but the swimming pool to me looked a bit too close to the beach road thereby lacking a bit of privacy. Otherwise very nice.

Sotiria at the reception had safely kept the stuff which she handed over with a smile. She was such a sweet girl to talk to and became a good friend.

Erotokritos Bakery

Erotokritos is undoubtedly the best bakery in town for the awesome range of bakery items to choose from and their ice cream. Add to that the coffee that you can walk away with. But what made our trip to this place so special was Margherita who owns and runs this place. A very sweet person it was great chatting with her. We soon became friends as we visited her outlet on all four nights we were in Kamari.

A sweet parting gift from Margherita for us
