The last four months has been one of the most exciting periods for me personally. With some memorable travel experiences in recent times. And this time the focus had been on experiencing more of our very own Bengal with a trip to Jaipur sandwiched in between. First with a solo 2 nights in a rural farmhouse in Jangipara which was full of surprises. And then Shantiniketan followed by Sundarbans and Guptipara in quick succession with family and friends. There was still some chill in the air and so set out for yet another solo trip. Two days out to explore Rahimpur village of Hooghly, Bengal before the summers came knocking. For a tryst with nature and village life.

The Farmhouse Stay

It was only three months back that I had visited this lovely rural farmhouse in the month of November. And had fallen head over heels in love with this place, vowing to return gain. Back then it was rice harvesting time and a farm full of vegetables, but this time the crops were different. Let’s experience the difference between winters and this time around when summers are on the way. Though some experiences remained the same.

It’s potato harvesting time

Visiting Tant Weavers at their home

Bengal and weaving of handloom ‘Taant’ saree has a historical connection dating back to the 15th century. Cotton threads are procured locally and the handspun yarn is produced by weavers from their tiny homes. The tant saree is sought after both in India and abroad for many generations. You will find plenty of homes with one room utilized for weaving. Let’s observe the process and speak to this gentleman.

Tant Weaving and the trade
The second Tanti (weaver) home

A tradition which still continues with the craft passing on from one generation to the other. But for how long? With increase in the prices of thread and margins being low the newer generation from these tant handloom craftsmen families are moving on to other trades. Sad but true.

And this experience
A Big Thank You

Since this was certainly my last trip to Rahimpur, the farmhouse and with the family, no words are enough to describe the hospitality of our grandmother from the Jana family. With a smile on her face she personally ensured that we ate our meals well with love and care.

Also she was the one who took me around the village and the weaver homes where she was treated like their own family member. Fond memories of her that I take back along with some sad ones as well. But then that’s life as I wish her and the family well. And for her many more active years of service for the welfare of villagers of Rahimpur that she has been passionately pursuing for many decades now.
Life moves on

If you loved this journey of Rahimpur, PIN it for later & forward to friends!

Is it possible to book this farmhouse for one night in 7th March for 5 heads. Very short notice I know, but looks inviting.
Am checking it out. Just give me some time.
Great!
Thanks
