It was in February 2020 that we had booked this property and paid in full for our planned stay in May that year. But then came Covid and all plans went awry. Our refund request was promptly acted on by the hotel and the money transferred the same day. In the hospitality industry these are the little gestures that matter the most. Therefore this time too our preference remained the same. Hotel Matina. When you plan your trip, here is our recommendation on why you must stay at Hotel Matina, Santorini. It’s in Kamari and just a three minute walk to the famous Black Beach.

What a lovely experience we had on all four days experiencing perfect hospitality with a smile. All through right from the time we had booked and during our entire stay as well, it was no nice communicating with all. Be it Vasiliki, who is one of the owners, Elias or Jean-Pierre. As was Mr. Fomes, if I have spelt his name correctly, who picked us up from the port and also dropped us at the airport when we left Santorini. And the entire breakfast team of Anna, Valentina, Ina, Jena, Giota and Natascha. Thank you and hope to see you all again sometime.

Fira

Fira the capital of Santorini is where most tourists are headed to for the spectacular views of the Aegean sea. And some prefer to stay there as well. Moreover buses for Oia, Akrotiri, Kamari and also the Santorini port leave from there. The airport is also in the city.

Oia

Oia is another cool spot that many travelers prefer for their accommodation. A lot has to do with the Oia sunset that the place is famous for. And of course the great views.

Kamari

Our choice was Kamari after a bit of research. Though we wished to visit Fira, Oia and other historical spots like Akrotiri and the red beach during the day time, we wanted our evenings more relaxed and without the crowds. Spending time at the famous Black Beach, the sea, the cafes and restaurants, some shopping and relaxed walks all around till late in the night. Kamari seemed just right and as it turned out it was just what we were looking for. And much more on offer besides that.

Family Tavern Danas – Fresh fish restaurant

As you come out of Hotel Matina on to the street, diagonally opposite is this nice restaurant, Family Tavern Danas. It undoubtedly is the best fresh fish restaurant in Kamari although every outlet does claim they only serve fresh catch. The seafood dishes turned out to be truly yummy. Another good reason to be putting up at Matina.

It was also great making friends with Dimitry the owner who was so nice to speak to. He and his wife plan to be in India soon and we plan to catch up again once they are here. It would also be a pleasure helping him put his India plan in place.
