12 Tasty Dutch Foods from Netherlands

Most of us in this world love to travel. To explore new destinations, their landmarks, history and culture. But for us there are two other aspects that are equally important when we travel abroad. Interacting with the people and enjoying the local delicacies that these countries have to offer. And Europe has been our favorite destination to head to in the last ten years. With Netherlands being one of our top favorites. So what are the tasty Dutch foods we don’t ever miss whenever we are there.

1. Bitterballen

Bitterballen is a crispy deep-fried meat based snack served with mustard and Dutch fries to go along. A beer or any other drink of your choice adds to the fun element as you watch the boats sailing by.

2. Stamppot

Stamppot is a lovely traditional Dutch dish made from mashed potatoes and vegetables. And if you are a non-vegetarian you can ask to add a chicken salami and a pork sausage on top. It’s a hearty meal in itself and has been one of our favorites over the years.

3. Patat

Patat is a Dutch version of french fries. They are thicker than normal fries that we see around in most countries. They are served with a variety of sauces like mayo or satay and goes best with a drink or even otherwise on the go.

4. Erwtensoep

Erwtensoep is a tasty thick, warming pea soup with cream added. Authentic erwtensoep is served with rye bread (roggerbrood) topped with bacon, cheese or butter and with a slice of mustard.

5. Cheese

Netherlands is famous worldwide for the variety of cheese that this beautiful country has on offer. Edam, Gouda, Leyden and Maasdam are the best places to head to for the best quality of cheese.

6. Rijsttafel

Rijsttafel is a table of many Indonesian small dishes served with rice, showcasing the culinary influence of this Asian country on the Netherlands.

7. Kibbeling

Kibbeling, a plate of small battered chunks of white fish served with garlic or tarta sauce. Utrecht is quite famous for this snack although it’s available throughout the Netherlands.

8. Pannenkoeken

Pannenkoeken are Dutch pancakes which are larger and thinner than the American variety and enjoyed with sweet toppings.

9. Poffertjes

Poffertjes are mini fluffy pancakes which are dusted with powdered sugar and served with butter. Some grapes and chocolate sauce served with it add to the fun.

10. Stroopwafels

Stroopwafels are thin waffles filled with gooey caramel syrups. And they go well with a cup of coffee. There are many varieties you can choose from.

11. Appeltaart

Appeltaart are thick apple pie with pastry both above and below the filling and often enjoyed with whipped cream, ice cream, custard or cheddar cheese.

12. Bossche Bollen

Bossche Bollen is an invention from the city of Den Bosch. It is filled with whipped cream and coated with chocolate fondant icing and are great with a coffee to go along.
