Green County Wellness Retreat Kolkata

This nice and eco-friendly resort is not exactly in Kolkata but just a hundred kms away on a smooth ride on Durgapur Expressway. We started quite early planning to have our breakfast somewhere midway. And found this nice cool place on the highway with good options and quality food. The four of us Chandan, Goat, me and our excellent driver had a sumptuous breakfast before we set off for ‘Green County Wellness Retreat’ near Burdwan.

Green County Wellness Retreat is spread over 150 acres with a bio-diversity park, a lake, numerous ponds, unspoiled nature and is next to 5,000 acres of wilderness. The property is owned by a very good friend of mine. Since he wasn’t at the resort and was back at his home here in Kolkata, the ducks waited eagerly there to welcome us.

The Lake & Boating

Boating facility on paddle boats is a key attraction of the resort. Day boarders, park visitors, picnickers and guests can opt to spend some memorable moments together. Be it with their family or friends.

Daily tickets for park visitors are available at the gate for Rs 50 per person which also allows them to explore nature within the park, take boat rides and eat drink and be merry at the cafe ‘Hoi Choi’ within the park.

And while you choose what to order and wait for the food, the kids with you could probably keep themselves busy while going up and down in the play area next door.

Green County, the Resort

Green County offers wide varieties of rooms in different price categories. They include cottages, Superior, Aqua Villa and Aqua Villa Suites with complimentary breakfast included. Fishing and swimming during summer months and bird watching throughout the year are one of the favorite activities of the guests. A stay of 1-2 nights is ideal to send you back refreshed.

Take a Plunge

The Vedic Massage Centre is being set up and should be operational in a few months as we understood. Goat desperately wanted at least a local massage as we kept discouraging him and hoping that no one from the village was willing to offer the services that day. We finally managed to avoid a mustard oil smelling Goat in the room as we prepared for the lovely evening ahead starting with onion pakoras fried in mustard oil, tea and coffee.

The Bong & Food

As we settled down for our lunch on our first day, it didn’t take too long for us to get started. Because it was ordered a while in advance and as we came down from our rooms it was ready and hot waiting to be served. Steamed rice, Moogh dal, Jhurjhure Alu Bhaja, Doi Pona, Pabda Jhal & Chingri Malai Curry. Just awesome food and wonderful preparations served with lots of care. We couldn’t have asked for more.

What’s for Dinner?

Plain and simple. Tawa Roti, Yellow Dal Tadka, Alu Gobhi Bhaja, Smokeless Chullah Champaran Mutton, Mishti Doi & Hot Gulabjamuns for me.

Uff ki khelam! Maza aa gaya! Great food and great service with a smile made our evening even more special for the three of us BITS Pilani friends.

And Theirs at the ‘Pet Corner’

The Pet Corner enclosures are quite big ensuring proper comfort for their residents. Umpteen varieties of birds, turkeys, ducks, swans, hens, cock, rabbits and this cute Brazilian Macaw are a treat to watch. Each involved in their own world and some with friends to give company.

It’s Picnic time in Bengal

Starting Christmas to the third week of January, it’s Picnic time in Bengal. And Bongs over the years have been crazy about the Christmas cake and their picnic on 25th or any other subsequent weekend. Green County offers numerous picnic spots as well with each playing their own choice of loud Hindi music that being the trend these days.

When will the music stop?, I asked the manager Taposh. By 4 pm onwards there should be peace, he mentioned. Sir it’s a Sunday. I nodded in agreement. Sunday the 18th of January 2026.

A word of advice

Winters are a great time to be in ‘Green County’ when you can soak in the sun, take the morning and evening walks, enjoy the sunrise, the sunset, do bird watching and enjoy the cool and the peace. It would be equally good for small trips during the summer with swimming, fishing and relaxed evenings. And rural Bengal monsoons are just beautiful. But if you are seeking peace do avoid the picnic weekends in December & January if you are not one who is attending one of them.

But you never know. With a few gulps down your throat while you relax in your room balcony, you could soon be starting to enjoy the music and the beats. And dancing in your thoughts while these guys on a picnic from a leading private sector bank do the real dance on the floor. All depends on you, to be or not to be.

People Matter

It’s the people which make any organization good or not so good. And that’s all the more relevant in the hospitality industry where they are the faces. At times face says it all like Kamala Kanta‘s here. Very soft spoken and always with this smile, he was the one who arranged everything and made us feel comfortable in our rooms. Kamala was the perfect example of efficiency & effectiveness and truly an asset for the resort.

I loved the swagger in his walk as he approached my room while I was fiddling with my tv remote trying to get the device working. And then in the next 10 seconds flat, with some confident push of buttons all was done. He then turned, looked at me and flashed this smile. Isn’t it worth a million dollars? For me it was. He is Ranjan Sanyasi, the electrician of the resort.

They are Sanjay & Sujan who served our dinner with love and lots of care ensuring every bit of gastronomic happiness for the three of us. Even all the other staff who were there during lunch and breakfast were equally caring. Good training and excellent execution is what they demonstrated in plenty.

That’s Manojit Saha, the Chef of Green County who dished out some fabulous Bengali, Indian and Mughlai delicacies for us to have a rocking time without the need for any music.

A man for all seasons, he is Taposh Mitra the resident manager of the resort. A quiet confidence, good choice of words as he welcomed us, quick decision maker, always honoring commitments he made and strong managerial skills handling the entire operations with a smile were some of the qualities that we observed in him. He seemed the perfect man in the perfect place.

Final Thoughts

While we came back absolutely loving the one day and night spent in ‘Green County Wellness Retreat’, my thoughts went back to those days of late eighties when we were colleagues and then friends together learning the art of managing and leading people with integrity. The same values seemed ingrained in every staff we interacted with and who work here in this resort.

After all you got to see who co-owns this place. My friend of thirty-eight years and my namesake as well. And one who always believed that…

Green County Wellness Retreat. Wish to spend a few nights here with family & friends? Let me know and I’ll pass on the word to them to make you feel loved and wanted. Even otherwise these guys are just awesome.

If you loved the vibes of Green County Wellness Retreat, PIN it and forward to friends!
