Sorrento, charming Italian Lemon Town

The flight from Paris landed dot on time. And we had been praying that the weather was nice and sunny unlike in the French Capital. It wasn’t exactly that when we touched down at Naples International airport. However it wasn’t too bad either. Just a bit of clouds which vanished soon as we set out towards Sorrento, the charming Italian Lemon Town.

How to reach Sorrento

‘Naples Capodichino International Airport’ is well connected to cities in Europe, London and few Asian cities. Or you could arrive by trains from several destinations in Europe to Napoli Centrale station. From Naples you have 3 different options to reach Sorrento apart from a pre-booked private cab with driver.

Bus

The cheapest and most convenient option from the airport is the Curreri shuttle to Sorrento. The distance is 53 km and the journey takes around 75 min. Moreover the bus leaves from the parking area just outside the arrival terminal. Also, tickets are on first-come-first-serve basis. Try and sit on the right side of the bus for the best views of Sorrento Coastline. We did and loved the views. There are other bus options too from Centrale station in the city center.

Train

Naples City Center and Napoli Centrale Station is 4 km away from the airport. You can avail the Alibus shuttle service between Capodichino airport and Naples from outside the arrival terminal. And the journey would take you 15-20 min to Centrale station. From there take the train called Campania Express. The journey takes about 45 min.

The trains have pre-booked seating if bought online, air conditioning and ample space to store your baggage. You could also buy your tickets from the Centrale station for the Napoli Porta Nolana/Garibaldi – Sorrento route. However these trains run only from mid-March to mid-October. You also have Circumvesuviana, which is a local train and that’s best avoided.

Ferry

The beautiful views of Amalfi coast, the Vesuvius volcano mountains and the thrill of a relaxed travel through the ocean is a unique experience. And you get this unique opportunity when traveling by a ferry from Naples to Sorrento. The journey takes around 45 min. The port of Naples is located in the city center (Piazza Municipio). It is about 15 km from Capodichino airport and only 10 min from the Naples central railway station. You could check out Ferryhopper for complete information and booking your tickets.

Where to stay in Sorrento

Sorrento is a cute small town and the best way to experience the charm is to walk around. The hotel options are many depending on your budget. However as the town sleeps early, you must stay in the city centre. We decided on Sorrento Relais, a bed and breakfast hotel which turned out to be a great budget choice. Our stay was for 3 nights and we planned to also do the day trips to Capri, Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius during this trip apart from Sorrento.

However when you plan to be there next in Italy, you must try out this one week Southern Italy itinerary.

Located next to the Museo Correale Di Terranova, Sorrento Relais is 5 min walk from Piazza Tasso, Sorrento’s main square. Also, Marina Piccola harbor is 1 km away for boats to the islands of Capri and Ischia. The lady at the reception was extremely efficient and helpful with tips on how to go around. The room was spacious and the complimentary breakfast was excellent with a wide variety in menu to choose from. Furthermore, tea, coffee and cookies were available on-the-house round the clock which was a big bonus for a coffee lover like me.

      1. Brought back such happy memories of our family time in Sorrento. The harbor was great. The plaza was charming. The food exceptional and the limoncello perfect! And lemons everywhere!

Lovely write-up! It’s actually impossible to do Sorrento justice: there is SO much to see, explore, do and eat! A treasure around every corner! We have very fond memories of our visit and will most definitely return!

  1. I have been to Naples and Capri, but sadly not made it to Sorrento yet. I have heard great things, though, and this post more than backs that up, even if it’s just for the limoncello!

    1. You will certainly love Sorrento Paul. And tasting limincello in almost every shop that you walk into, just one of the wonderful things to do. Some great food options as well.

  2. I have yet to go to Italy but I adore all things lemon flavored, so this will be my #1 stop when I finally go! I’m dying to try the candies and jams you mentioned, it all must have been so fresh. The hotels all look so fancy and charming as well!

  3. Your blog post brings back such great memories of our visits to Sorrento. I can almost smell lemon scent in the air. We loved just wandering in town and sitting down in the main square for a cafe and people watching. Those sunset views certainly are memorable.

It’s a great guide with lots of tips. I haven’t been to Sorrento yet, but if it’s a lemon town, I should visit, as I eat one lemon daily 🙂 It’s pretty picturesque with many attractions and things to do. I love Marina Piccola Harbor. I would love to try Villa Massa, which you recommended.
