The world has changed and so have the women of Kolkata. Not just confined to their homes like the yesteryears, they now manage their studies or jobs and look after their close ones as well with relative ease. Be it their parents, in-laws, children and of course the difficult husband if they have one. She is the new age woman who loves to go solo at times, with her soulmate occasionally and freaks out when eating out or partying with her friends and colleagues. She is equally comfortable flaunting her sarees and western dresses depending on the occasion. And she is invariably proud of her city. Come let’s follow her while going around this charming city of Kolkata.

Kolkata or Calcutta for ages

As this handsome gentleman cleans up before starting a new chase of life, we could hum together these few lines from this beautiful song on Kolkata in the movie Praktan, sung by two outstanding singers Anupam Roy & Shreya Ghoshal before starting our chase as well.

Kolkata. The lyrics suggest you too walk and see Kolkata, you too think about Kolkata and think about whether you will go or not go with me. This song in itself sums up the eternal spirit of this city, its culture, its heritage, food and its moments. And as always there is love in the air. A lot might have changed in the city over the years but its ethos remains intact. Coming with me? Come let’s go.

Sadly we missed visiting Kolkata when we were in India. I love how the art tells you so much about the people and traditions. And I loved the series on women power. The different modes of transportation were fun to see in the art. And funny to see rainy days captured too. A fascinating way to see images of Kolkata.
Thank you Linda. Glad you loved going through.
I am charmed by the water colours in the paintings. How completely unique and incredible way of story-telling about the lovely and apparently colourful city of Kolkata. My hats off to you, Avanish Trivedi what a talented artist.
Thank you Adele for your appreciation. And yes Avanish is an incredible artist.
I am from Kalighat, Kolkata. Your blog just brought all the memories of my hometown. I am awed at Avinash’s work. Thanks for the experience.
My pleasure Shreya. So glad could make you nostalgic.
These are very beautiful paintings, I would be happy to hang some of these in my home. He is very talented and portrays Kolkata so beautifully. I like the idea of following an independent woman around the streets of Kokata, and portraying her day through paintings.
Truly Avanish is amazing.
I could see the vibrant charming city of Kolkata from every stroke in the paintings. He brought the city to life in every sketch. Avanish Trivedi is definitely a talented artist. Kudos for you to help promoting his works through your blog.
Thanks Umiko.
What an adorable blog post on Kolkata – its women, lifestyles, and character. You have explored every mood in Kolkata – its rickshaws, trams, football, Pooja and Howrah Bridge too! And Hats off to the super talented artist – Avinash Trivedi! His images have added color to this blog post. I love Kolkata. 🙂
Thanks Jan. Glad you enjoyed.
I’ve been to India multiple times, and I do have Kolkata on my list, but sadly haven’t got a chance to visit yet (in my defense, it’s a huge country!). Thank you for this guide, but more than anything else, I’m so, so in love with the paintings! ❤️😍 I just love the way the artist beautifully captured the local life in Kolkata in watercolor, especially the ones with the lady in the saree. Makes me want to visit even more!
Thanks Ummi. Yes Avanish is an amazing artist.
Loved the pictures showing daily life in Kolkota. I have never been to the city, and my last visit to India was more than 15 years ago – a lot must have been changed. I used to draw when I started travelling. Developing films was expensive and as I was travelling on my own, it gave me a reason to linger at places.
Thanks Natascha. Glad you loved the art.
These are really beautiful works of art. It has truly captured the true state of Kolkata and how it has painted a beautiful story of this place.
